Oh Caaaaaaanadaaaaaaa
Vancouver is a mess.
This is probably one of the only times EVER where you can go out night after night and hear ‘Oh Canada’ over and over and really develop a dislike for the anthem. (Sorry Canada). It was cool the first few times. But it’s a bit of a shame when you hear another national anthem being sung in a bar and Canadians start booing like they do at a hockey game where it sounds like they are yelling boo, but actually they are yelling ‘Luuu’ (but this time they are actually yelling boo).
Last night I went out with my friend Noah and he asked me to teach him New Zealand’s national anthem… I asked ‘Maori or English version?’ Yes, that’s right… In NZ we know our anthem in TWO languages. I’ve decided this is a cool thing.
So the only thing I have to report about the Olympics so far, is that there are a lot of Canadians out and about. It costs $20 to get into the Irish House and then once you are inside, it costs $8 for a can of beer. There is lots of amazing free music. Curling is fun to watch, as is the speed skating. And it seems that to feel truly ‘Canadian’ right now, one must:
- Own a ‘Canada’ sweater (in red or black)
- Have Canada flags sticking out from somewhere on their vehicle
- Know the words to the national anthem (just in English)
- Know the names of the Olympic mascots
- Understand what someone means when they talk of the ‘Cowbell’
So despite our not-so-overly-excited-about-the-Olympics attitudes, Tess and I had a fun time experiencing a bit of the Olympic culture last week. Our ‘foreign accent tally’ is climbing, our ‘people doing weird stuff that they wouldn’t normally do unless the Olympics were on tally’ is quickly climbing and our ‘reasons to be excited about the Olympics tally’ is climbing.. albeit slowly.
